History
of the Work in Australia Australian
Centres Centre
Activities |
In 1974 the
first Australasian Centre was established in Adelaide. The Adelaide
group was active for about five years, during which time it also
worked together with a small group of pupils in Auckland, NZ, with a
Centre subsequently being established in Auckland in 1979. After this
period of activity in Adelaide, many of the pupils in the group
dispersed to various parts of Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
Although there were no formal activities of the School in Australia
again until 1988, the group in Auckland grew steadily, and became the main
centre of activity in Australasia for many years.
During the early 1980's, the Work continued to develop in Australia, and by 1985
there were a number of new pupils joining the School as
a result of responses to advertisements still in circulation from
the Work in Adelaide. For a number of years the pupils throughout
Australia maintained contact, primarily by mail, until in 1988
another effort was made to re-establish the Work. Centres were
subsequently established in Melbourne and several years later in
Sydney.
Today
there are now approximately 25 pupils and members residing
throughout the eastern states of Queensland,
New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and
Tasmania, with another 15 pupils and members in New Zealand.
At present
there are two active Centres in Australia: one in the Melbourne
metropolitan area in Victoria, and one in the Sydney metropolitan area, NSW.
Despite the
large distances between our major cities and other Centres of the
School throughout
the world, the Work in the Australian Centres is strongly linked
together and
supported by pupils from throughout Australasia and many other
centres of the International
School of the Golden Rosycross world-wide.
The
activities in Australia are undertaken with enthusiasm and vigour by
a small
but very active and dedicated group of pupils and members. Regular pupil and member activities are held at
the two Centres, as
well as public presentations and introductory information
courses, which are held regularly at various public venues in both
Melbourne and Sydney. There are also small groups of pupils
residing in or near both Brisbane and Canberra.
